2021/05 Memorial Day in Grayland, WA
We spent Memorial Day Weekend in Grayland, WA. The house we rented had very close access to the beach (less than 5 mins). In addition, we were very close to Westport which excitingly has a Dollar General. That was exciting because they literally had everything that we had forgotten (like beach towels).
The town of Westport is also very nice but not over-powered with nic-nac shops like some ocean front towns (don't worry there are still plenty). I think that the kids enjoyed it and they would have loved to spend more time at the beach there.
The first night we all got in late and so we did a quick dinner at the Lighthouse Bistro. HIGHLY recommend it. Everything was delicious and a very professional environment. We also went to he beach where we decided that we needed kites.
The next day we went into Westport with the intent of getting missing items at Dollar General. We found that the town had quite a bit to offer and seafood restaurants that we wanted to try. The kids also loved the beach there where they got completely soaked. We decided to get kites at a local kite store.
We returned and decided to go to the Wheelhouse Restaurant since they were closed at our last trip. It was American comfort food and very cafe-ish. We completely over-whelmed them and the quality of food, while well-priced...the price reflected it. We had top sirloin steak at the Bistro (pics below) and steak (ribeye) at the Lighthouse. It was night and day. I would have used the ribeye as flank/strip steak after cutting the fat out. Oh, they actually forgot to cook Roger's steak. Seriously, everyone had their food but him and they had just started to prepare it. Regardless, staff was very friendly but I wouldn't get anything any more complicated than fish and chips or a burger there (no pics).
We returned late night to fly our kites....just before dark. Well, there was no wind. And also the dusk thing. After fumbling in the dark we all managed to find the trail back and return to the house.
There was a bit of drinking (pics included) and I somehow forgot that my phone was in my swimming trunks (that's not a good idea) and it spent a good hour in the hot tub. Needless to say that it was fried. There is where I relied on other folks for pics.
We had a lovely dinner that Erica prepared for Lisa's birthday.
Monday was departure day and we headed for one last trip to Westport with grand visions of getting fish & chips, going to the beach and flying kites.
That didn't quite work out. We did manage to find a place that had enough seating for us all. It was called Merrinos and it was spectacular! They have upstairs indoor and outdoor seating and a small bar with beer and wine. Everything that we tried their was delicious: fish & chips, crab melt, oyster shooter, etc. The kids' reactions to their cheese sandwiches was mixed, but I think they just wanted to go to the beach. Sadly, it was late in the day and we decided that the long trek to the beach, allowing the kids to play, fly kites, and return to the cars - soaking wet for a 3hour drive just didn't sound great.
After some complaining, a few flew kites in the parking lot we left. The kids (at least Cody) were still complaining and continued to do so the whole way home.
For us, it was to BestBuy to get a replacement phone before work the next day.
Below are some of the pics that we took. My apologies, I have not had a chance to put them in any sort of order or caption them properly.
Until next year or next trip!
