Well, I warned everyone that I would return from after taking my Glock Armorer Course. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a wait to schedule it. Some things were clarified:

1. Glock HAS stopped using the Tenifer metal treatment process about 2 years ago (but see #3) and use an 'equivalent' process that has the same Rockwell Hardness.  My guess is that they don't have to pay royalties for their new process. We saw some high mileage Gen3 and 4 pistols and the 4 actually had less normal finish wear (they probably were handpicked but still impressive).

2. beginning about 2 years ago they started making COMPLETE pistols in the U.S. (just a coincidence to #1? I don't think so). Sorry, there was not time to get more details. I wish I had clarified what was being produced on the US line.

3. the 2011 Glock Annual still says that the sub-compacts are Tenifer treated, but try to find the word 'Tenifer' anywhere else!

So, my guess is that the Tenifer treatment is being phased out and so are the royalties to HEF. Incidentally, look for Tenifer references on the Walther PPQ? I can't find them any more either...

It is not exactly new but defines awesome. If you are unfamiliar check youtube for videos.

Perhaps I just like obscure things but here is an item that I haven't seen much about from SHOTSHOW 2012. Awesome in its own way. From Outdoor Channel:

There are a lot of zombie defense items at SHOTSHOW 2012. I don't know how I missed it, but Gunblast.com has a pic of the ultimate zombie defense item.  Quite frankly Colt has 'brought it.' Although they are not marketing it as an anti-zombie gun, I think it is perfect (think Jonah Hex).

That's right -- a frakkin' gatling gun!! Awesomeness!

A lot of bandwidth is spent debating the 'proper' staking of an AR15 gas key.  Additionally, some on the internet stress that having 1 in 7 twist is the best.  I guess that this is because twist isn't optimized for different applications/rifles/bullet weights/etc. Reading some posts on internet forums you would think that any other twist simply won't fire a bullet.

Anyway, back to gas key staking. For some reason some folks are unwilling (or unable) to re-stake it themselves. DSARMS has come up with a non-traditional solution ds-arms-looks-to-end-gas-key-staking-with-thier-new-keyloc that is quickly visible to verify and requires no additional work. It is nice for the folks that simply don't like the look of the traditional hammer & punch method.

I don't know anything about their BCG's but it is very clean looking.

Why do I mention it? Because they feel that it is the best all around twist for those wanting to shoot the range of 55gr - 77gr bullets. This is something that companies like Olympic Arms, Rock River Arms, LaRue have been saying for awhile.

Twist is always a compromise that I don't think that 1:7 is necessarily the best for a 16" bbl semi-auto civilian rifle.

the reasoning for the barrel twist change to 1-8 vs. 1-7 is to allow shooters with bullet weights in the 70-77 grain have optimum accuracy as well as shoot great with the 55-69 grainers.

He is someone that agrees:

A twist rate of 1:8 inches is the best compromise for those who wish to shoot reasonably light and reasonably heavy bullets in the .223 Remington, and it is what I prefer for all-around use.

So, it is the first full day of Shot Show 2012 and I have seen little that is truly exciting. So far, gunblast.com has the best pics @ GUNBLAST SHOTSHOW 2012. I am actually having a hard time finding out what is new. Are they clamping down on photos this year?

Here, so far, is my favorite new pic/item - a skull pattern stock - and from Weatherby! Yeah, I know, strictly aesthetic but definitely on the "I haven't seen that before" list!

Mossberg has a drum fed shotgun, and Hazard4 has some neat new sling bags. Hopefully there is more to come (it is only the first full day of SHOT).

You might have noticed that this site (and my others) were blacked out (unavailable) from 8am - 4pm. My apologies to those trying to access it the site.

I believe that the First & Second Amendment go hand and hand (that is why Madison put them together at the top). If one is compromised then the other is not far behind.

With government controlled censorship there is little that we can do to predict or stop it. This site could simply disappear because the topic of "firearms" is deemed inappropriate (hence the sample blackout today).

This bill has a lot of big $$$ backers behind it and we need to contact our legislators to stop it.

This is an important issue. I personally know of (2) ranges that have been involved with litigation in an attempt to shut them down.

It is pretty commonly believed by gun rights supporters that the problem of gun registration that it will lead to confiscation (a la Hitler).

Well, it seems that in Canada that is what they have done to a specific rifle that is a .22 modeled to look like an AK. The confiscation without compensation seems to be based solely on the fact it looks like an AK.

And yet the anti-gun folks say that confiscation is not the goal..

When Bill C-68, the gun registry bill, was being debated, opponents said registration of firearms would lead to their eventual confiscation.

Now that is happening.

Just before Christmas, owners of certain firearms were informed by letter that their rifles had been reclassified as prohibited weapons in Canada and they must be turned over to police officials.

Failure to comply would mean the weapons would be taken by force and the owners thrown in jail. The reason for the change: The rifle looks scary.

The Armi Jager AP-80 is a .22-calibre rimfire rifle that looks like the AK-47, the Soviet-era military rifle. The fact is the AP-80 doesn’t work like the AK-47, fires a vastly smaller round than the AK-47 and has no parts that are interchangeable with the AK-47.

This change appears to be based on looks.

The decision comes from the RCMP-run Canadian Firearms Centre. Bureaucrats at the centre made the decision to change the rifle’s classification from non-restricted to prohibited without any input from Parliament. A court upheld the decision, but the problem truly is that bureaucrats have been delegated this authority at all.

Hundreds of Canadians who followed the law and registered their legally purchased firearms with the gun registry are now seeing those very same rifles taken away by government order.

It seems odd this would happen just ahead of the gun registry’s demise. But lawyer Ed Burlew, who has represented many people in cases involving the registry, said on my show Byline that police forces across the country appear to be stepping up their raids on the homes of gun owners before they lose access to the registry.

Firearms that are reclassified and seized, like the AP-80, are surrendered without any compensation. When the government takes your personal property, don’t you think it should at least pay you for it?

There is also a problem with allowing the police to decide what is allowed and what is banned while they themselves are enforcing the laws.

We elect politicians to make law and it’s the role of police and judges to enforce the law. This system has it all messed up.

Would we allow this when it comes to traffic violations and let police forces set and change speed limits?

No.

Would we allow the police to decide which substances are considered narcotics and which ones Canadians are legally allowed to consume?

No, and if anyone tried you can bet the media would be up in arms over this.

“Harper government takes hard line against soft drugs,” would scream the headlines.

Where is the outrage over the government allowing police to confiscate private property? It doesn’t exist.

Instead they are chasing a story about a foreign lesbian couple who got married in Canada and are now complaining they can’t get divorced because they do not live here.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews was asked about this gun registry mess on Sun News Network and defended the current situation.

“It is not a decision that I make as a politician, it’s something that the police and classification experts make,” Toews said.

I’m guessing people who backed the Conservatives over their promise to scrap the gun registry would have problems with this.

It’s time for Toews and the rest of the Harper government to wake up and fix this mess.

This is an article by a lady who was a non-firearm owner who had never held or fired a pistol before. It is really well-written which is a pleasant surprise. Kudos to the author and Elle.

If you are wondering why I was reading Elle Magazine Online it is because the article was "recommended" by my local newspaper website due to whatever I was reading at the time.

Give it a read or have your wife/girlfriend/mother/etc read it if they are unsure about firearms.
