Hornady has a new 6.8SPC 120gr SST Load

This looks like a good load for deer. The ballistic coefficient is about .40 which is better than my favorite load the SSA 110gr Sierra Pro. The only thing is that according to Hornady's charts (shown below) the drop in the 120gr SST and their 110gr VMAX @ 200 yards is the same.
Notice @ 500 yards (further than I would be hunting deer) the retained velocity is almost the same with the additional energy of a heavier bullet. Drop @ 500 yards is only a little over an 1" more. That's the BC.

I wonder how far off a 110gr caliberated BDC will be with it.
Definitely have to get my hands on some of the 120gr and try it out.

New theme installed

You may have noticed that I have changed to a much simpler theme. I liked the previous one, but it had some quirks. The biggest one was that when it displayed in summary it disabled links. Also the colors weren't conducive to determine what was link, header text, etc.

I also received a number of complaints that finding the instructor discounts was a little hard. I think that this due to the summary mode disabling attachments and links.

This is not the final format, but so far I like it. I am still trying to get the logo back on the left side like where it was previously and tweak the colors.

In case you still like the other theme I still use it on my REG7 HL7 Tools website. The limitations don't seem to matter as much there.

This will also serve as another step to differentiate the different sites. You can even Tweet/Facebook/GoogleReader/Orkut it (although I am not even sure what some of those things mean).

Thoughts welcome.

The Glock 23 continues to haunt me. As much as I try to hate it and prefer M&P's, 1911's, S&W 3rd Gens, I keep coming back to it.

Why? Because it is almost the perfect ALL AROUND size. Note: there are better range pistols, there are better CCW pistols but OVERALL the 23 can do it all.

Also, having dabbled in 9mm during the ammo crisis last year I have to admit that I prefer 40S&W (and, of course, the 10mm). Not that I don't feel safe with a good 9mm load - and there are lot's! And not platform -- in fact I am a HUGE fan of the M&P 9c, but I just prefer a 180gr and its thump.

But, why the Gen4? Well, I already have a Gen3 and I find the new grip texture to be really comfortable. And the SeeCamp-inspired dual recoil spring? Well, quite frankly it does work in my 27 and countless other implementations (Colt Defender, etc).

The finish worries me, but as long as the slide is Tenifer steel hardened, I am ok with it. Break in (as reputed on the internet) is not a big deal to me. You should put 300-500rds through a pistol before you deem it worthy to stake you life on any way. Besides, I have a Gen3 23 to rely on anyway.

I see a Gen4 Glock 23 in my near future.

Oops..I am a big fan of the Steyr pistols (including the pyramid sights) but somehow I missed that they came out with a new model the C9-A1. It is a full size grip from the M's with the shorter slide of the S's.
Here is a link to Steyr's website: Steyr C9-A1 pistols

I think they look sharp!

So, a lot of the "tactical" scopes come caliberated for a 223 BDC. Usually 55gr. Now you can use it with any caliber/weight but you will need to compensate for your compensator.

A couple of the scope companies will make a custom one for you that you can swap out. Much easier, especially if you have a favorite load. Leupold and Vortex come to mind.

I am considering an MK AR (1.5-4 or 3-9) and was curious how much it would. Not finding the price on the website I emailed them. The next day I received a price quote of $59.99 + tax. Not bad!

In case you were wondering it would be for a SSA (Silver State Armory) 6.8 SPC 110gr Sierra Pro SP load.

Well, Rob Pincus was at FAS this weekend. We didn't find out until late and his classes were all booked. Bummed, he is a good instructor and we enjoy his shows. He is a non-snobby firearms guy.

Here is an article that he wrote: "Choosing a defensive handgun" that has been getting some chatter on firearms forums. In particular, smith-wessonforum.com because of his recommendation of a J-frame 38 (or two) as a practical self-defense tool. It is an opinion that I happen to share.

I have to wonder though, with his statement: "As long as you can shoot it well...let your friends snicker at your tiger-striped stainless/blued Browning High Power if they want"
Has he been to our blog?

After all, I am big fan of the tiger-stripe HiPower!

OK, 'fess up who has been snickering?

GLOCK Gen's

With GLOCK's 4th Gen's out there is a lot of chatter and confusion about the different pistols.

Here is a great a pic that shows them all. Gen1 through 4 is Left to Right, Top to Bottom (click on pic to enlarge):

and the misunderstood RTF2 (which is a modified Gen3):

Steve retired in 1998 from the Denton Police Department after 25 years of loyal and very dedicated service. He left a special legacy at the PD, and many of the people there remember him with love and respect. He left a piece of himself at the Police Department that will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him. He definitely touched their lives in a very special way.

He had a passion for guns that was legendary. Target practice was a part of his daily life, and he was known as the premier expert on the Browning Hi Power. Steve was an accomplished writer who could always express himself very eloquently on paper. After he retired, he started writing manuals about his beloved firearms. He was a self-published author who wrote four gun-related books that were very well received in the gun community. He even wrote one novel that impresses everyone who reads it. He was a very talented man.

Steve lived his life by a strict moral code and expected others to do the same. He could be rigid and uncompromising at times, but he was the most giving, loving, decent man who ever lived. You always knew where you stood with Steve because he would tell you. Everyone who knew him loved him and wanted to be his friend, because Steve was true-blue and always there for those he cared about.
